The story behind...
What are "grammos"?
Easy: they're grammatical errors spotted in signs, billboards, and other
public displays. Who coined the word? Mark Jordan and Steve
Hershberger, two high school English teachers from Goshen, Indiana.
Well, they'reschoolteachers by day; by night they're
Grammar Cops.
Thanks to their incredible love of the English language and
dogged persistence (not to mention a sizeable grant from the Eli Lilly
Corporation),

Mark (left) and Steve consider the validity of
the defense made by the manager of a KFC concerning a grammatical error
on the sign out front.
(They let her off easy...just a warning.) |
Mark and Steve began a campaign in the summer of '99 to clean up America's
signscape before the next millennium. As Don Quixote tilted at windmills,
Officers Mark and Steve took aim on grammatical errors in billboards and
signs. Though rejected and scorned, they fought the good fight and,
sadly, lost.
They are sharing some of their work here. If you'd
like to see more, they have a 30-minute video you may enjoy. For
$29.95 you get a self-contained, one-period grammar lesson that is fast-paced,
funny, and actually quite philosophical about the nature of language and
its rules. You can preview a 10-minute internet version of this video
at IFILM [ http://www.ifilm.com/main.taf ] (after March 1, 2000). Click
here to order.
Also, be sure to check back here frequently
to see updated examples of some of the more egregious errors they have
documented.
